Miami-based alternative investments firm H.I.G. Capital has recruited a team from Morgan Stanley Private Equity to launch a GP-led secondaries business. Led by Managing DirectorDan Wieder, the team also includes Managing Director Yash Gupta and Principals Austin Gerberand Joe Holleran. H.I.G. Capital joins a growing number of firms known largely for PE investing to start GP-led secondary groups. They include Boston-based Audax Group, Los Angeles-based Leonard Green & Partners, and New York City-based Warburg Pincus.

Harrison Davis has left as partner at New York City-based buyout firm TZP Group to join mid-cap firm H.I.G Capital as a managing director for its Miami office. The move is one of several recent departures from prominent PE firms or investors.

Big Moves: H.I.G. Capital, Tail End Capital, Maryland SRPS

The following Big Move! items appeared in the January 26 free edition of Private Equity Career News.

Oliver Slade, managing director, and Alexia Klat, principal, will lead a new office in Dubai for mid-market buyout and credit firm H.I.G. Capital, according to a press release. Part of their job will entail cultivating investors in the region. Slade joined the firm in early 2022 after serving as head of Middle East and Africa for Partners Group AG. Klat joined the firm's special situations investment team in 2014 after working in structured credit for Deutsche Bank.

Matt Gullen re-joins H.I.G. Capital as managing director in Miami office after stint at Comvest Partners

The global pandemic has largely shut down senior hiring.

But H.I.G. Capital found a way around the impracticality of holding in-person interviews, giving office tours, and wooing candidates and their spouses with fancy dinners. It hired someone it already knew--Matt Gullen, who spent more than nine years at the firm from 2007 to 2016 before leaving as a principal to become a partner at Comvest Partners.

As a new managing director in the Miami office, Gullen takes responsibility for finding and executing on both platform and add-on acquisitions in business services, chemicals, telecommunications and manufacturing. Before leaving H.I.G. Capital in 2016 Gullen had served on the boards of several H.I.G. Capital portfolio companies. They include Cornerstone Chemical Company, Lexmark Carpet Mills and Valtris Specialty Chemicals.
