Start-up VC/PE firm to hire VP/principal, senior associate: Sponsored

Macellum Private Capitala multi-stage investment firm that backs minority-owned or -led consumer and retail companieshas openings for a VP/Principal and a Senior Associate to join its New York City-based team. It’s an opportunity to make your mark on a well-financed start-up addressing a large, underserved market.

The Firm: Macellum Private Capital (pronounced Ma KELL um) was founded at the start of this year and led by Managing Partner Daniel Balzora, who has more than 20 years of experience in private equity, investment banking and operations. Most recently Balzora was a senior member of the investment team at TZP Group, a multi-strategy firm focused on small consumer and business services companies. Before that Daniel worked on consumer, industrial and healthcare deals as an investor at Pouschine Cook Capital.

Strategic Relationships: The firm gets both operational and financial support from its parent, Macellum Capital Management, which manages some $500 million via consumer-focused hedge funds. It also has strategic relationships with G-III Apparel Group (tkr: GIII); a $3 billion global apparel and accessories company, Citi Trends (tkr: CTRN); a $1 billion retailer that sells primarily to Black and Hispanic consumers; and renowned businessman Bob Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and The RLJ Companies, a holding company that holds interests in companies across various industries.

The Strategy: Macellum Private Capital intends to invest $5 million to $30 million at a time for minority positions in consumer and retail companies either owned or led by Black or other minority Americans. “There’s just a huge unmet need to back these companies with capital and strategic resources,” said Daniel, pointing out that only about 1 percent of VC dollars have gone to Black founders, and 2 percent to Hispanic founders. The firm will invest at every stage of development, from seed stage to growth stage to late-stage. Sectors of particular interest include apparel, e-commerce, health & beauty, home goods, experiential & lifestyle companies.

Your Role: As a VP/Principal, you’ll work directly with the Managing Partner on all aspects of the investment process, from sourcing and underwriting to execution and monitoring. You’ll supervise one or two senior associates. As a Senior Associate you’ll work on every phase of deal-making alongside the Managing Partner and VP/Principal and be encouraged to source investment opportunities. Both the VP/Principal and Senior Associate will be involved in capital raising and related activities.

Your Qualifications: Candidates for the VP/Principal and Senior Associate positions should have an undergraduate degree “with excellent academic credentials.” For the VP/Principal position you’ll need at least six to eight years of experience in VC, growth equity or private equity in the consumer industry and ideally have had exposure to minority deals. For the Senior Associate position, you’ll need two to four years of similar experience.

The Culture: This is a “situation where you have to be very entrepreneurial,” and have a desire “not just to make investments but to help build our business,” said Daniel. You should enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative atmosphere where you’ll have a hand in just about every aspect of investing and firm-building.

Location: You’ll be located in downtown New York City.
