MiddleGround Capital seeks a VP/director of investor relations: Sponsored

MiddleGround Capital, a fast-growing powerhouse in the middle market, and an innovator in keeping employees healthy and happy, seeks to hire a VP/director of investor relations to help keep its fund-raising engine purring.

In this position you’ll help raise the firm’s flagship funds. Among tasks, you’ll create prospect lists, develop investor relations materials, maintain records of interactions with limited partners, organize quarterly investor meetings, and supervise other investor events and activities. You’ll also have an opportunity to find co-investors for individual deals. Your work on this front will include developing marketing materials and calling prospective investors.

The VP/director of IR position is located in the firm’s Lexington, Kentucky headquarters. To qualify you’ll need eight or more years of experience in private equity, including experience raising money from institutional investors. You should arrive with “extensive LP relationships” in middle-market co-investments.

The Strategy: MiddleGround Capital typically invests $25 million to $100 million in North American companies generating $15 million to $30 million of EBITDA in industrial, manufacturing and specialty distribution. In 2021 the firm closed its second pool earmarked for platform and add-on acquisitions. The $800 million raised marked a big step up from its $459.5 million debut fund closed in mid-2019. Director of Human Capital Krissie Baily said the firm enjoyed a nearly 100 percent re-up rate with happy investors.

The History: John Stewart co-founded the firm with Partners Scot Duncan and Lauren Mulholland in early 2018. Stewart and Duncan earlier built out the operations group for a prior PE shop after working for many years together at Toyota Motor Corporation. Both experiences figure prominently in the firm’s hands-on stewardship of its portfolio companies. Mulholland spent six years working with Stewart and Duncan at their prior firm, most recently as a director on the transaction team.

The Culture: The founders promote “work-life balance across the organization,” said Baily. Indeed, Stewart is famous on Linkedin for posting about the firm’s employee-friendly policies, including hiring a professional “to support employee health full time,” letting employees see salary bands for other positions at the firm, and moving to a four-day work week “to give employees 20% of their time back.” The firm seeks high achievers who learn quickly and aren’t afraid to fail. It values a diversity of backgrounds.

The Perks: The firm hosts get-togethers for employees, investors and portfolio company executives at nearby Keeneland Race Course. The Lexington area is dotted with lakes that provide ample opportunity for fishing and boating. Red River Gorge, less than an hour’s drive from headquarters, is a popular rock climbing and hiking destination. Downtown Cincinnati is only about an an hour and 20-minute drive.

Good luck!
